Culinary Connection
WEST
The Angeleno Hotel
By Lark Aldrin-Clement

Remember the old Holiday Inn Hotel off the 405 freeway at Sunset Boulevard? Located just over the other side of the hill, it was a rather run down establishment that most commuters scoffed at. As of spring 2006, the building was reopened after a multi-million dollar renovation transforming it in to a chic modern hotel called "The Angeleno". In addition to the 209 rooms and stylish outdoor heated pool, the penthouse level is now home to the luxurious WEST, a restaurant with stunning views and sumptuous food.
With culinary talents of Executive Chef Mark Mittleman, WEST is considered a "Cal-Italian" restaurant that prides itself on dishes that are influenced by Tuscan and Mediterranean flair. With more than 10 years of experience, Mittleman's gastronomic ability has spanned the gambit from starting as a private chef, to owning his own restaurant, to working at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
As you get off the elevator at the 17th floor, your senses are tantalized by the aroma of fresh steaks and views of Los Angeles from the vast ocean to the downtown cityscape. Greeted by a well versed server, you are treated with personalized care as you are walked through the menu to gauge your tastes and preferences.
Start off with a signature "Pomegranate Martini", blended perfectly with Ketel One Citroen Vodka and a fruity base to whet the palate. As a featured appetizer, also available as an entrée, try the "Saffron Risotto". Light, yet filling, the al dente Italian rice is tossed with yellow and red teardrop tomatoes and subtle strands of saffron for extra flavor. As you peruse the menu for your main course, it can become a little difficult to select the next scrumptious dish. Employ the help of your server. Their training includes a written test and shadowing a head waiter for weeks. They are able to present appropriate dishes with complimenting wines according to your wishes.
WEST has a wonderful selection of black angus steaks that have been dry-aged for thirty days which is a process that creates more flavor and tenderness. According to Jeff, one of the servers who has been working at the restaurant for almost a year, "I used to be a rib eye man, but after having the bone-in filet, it just simply blows my mind". The twelve ounce steak is served flawlessly braised along with a baked garlic bulb and sprig of dill to garnish. If you like medium rare, the meat is delectably chewy and reddish throughout. This piece of heavenly meat goes well with a side of sautéed spinach mixed with lemon, garlic, and chili flakes, which adds a spicy kick. Offering a wide selection of Italian and Californian wines, Jeff recommends a 2005 Robert Stemmler Carneros Pinot Noir. With aromas of berries and earthy nuance, this Pinot intermingles with the filet perfectly.
As the sun sets and the lights on the freeway whiz by below a swanky feel emerges as candles are lit and the chandeliers are dimmed. Even though the restaurant has a glamorous feel it is by no means overly ostentatious. A bar adjacent to the dining area allows for Happy Hour patrons, which runs 4pm - 7pm during the business week, to enjoy the nightly sports game on an overhead flat screen. Some nights offer live entertainment with artists such as Jazz crooner Mel Torme's son, and during the late hours DJ's spinning house music.
To complete the evening, there is nothing like a frothy cappuccino accompanied by a silky chocolate mousse infused with a citrus flavor presented in a round glass topped with orange rind and whipped cream. So flavorful and full bodied, "It's like having two cappuccinos", says Jeff whose recommendation has once again pleased our indulged palates. With breathtaking views, attentive service, and Chef Mittleman's unique perspective on eclectic dishes, WEST makes for a fulfilling experience. Suitable for a special occasion, date night, or a gathering of friends, WEST delivers on a golden platter. As the restaurant slogan states, "Sip. Taste. Discover".
