Fashion Week New York 2008
By Rita Cook

With celebrities strutting their star power to the backdrop of models strutting the new designs by designers like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen and BCBG, New York's Fashion week in early February rolled out the good, the bad and the ugly for the Spring and Fall 2008 seasons. Other notes worth mentioning, the season will be big on poofy sleeves and long flowing skirts. Oh, and lots of neutrals from most, that's right, again!
Big Names
Calvin Klein - In the audience at Calvin Klein, Liv Tyler and Anna Wintour got lost in the rhythmic soundtrack that turned techno accompanied by smooth creations that were all about minimal. Calvin Klein jackets, skirts, and dresses in wool, cashmere, and metallic silk combinations were tailored and trendy, just what we would expect.
Ralph Lauren - Ralph Lauren had Sheryl Crow and Lauren Bush dons the crowd with his usual charm written all over his fall collection. Think English hunting party with a dash of cashmere - coats and jackets to die for in luxurious fabrics boasting rich purples and reds. Even velvet was on the menu - evening gowns never looked so good or refined.
Zac Posen - At the Zac Posen show, Veronica Webb and Sean Combs got a first glance of boudoir meets cabaret. Sequined bib dresses and goddess gowns with tattered framboise were just part of the story. Iridescent cloqué jackets and heather wool suiting also made the new line pop with art meets fashion ambiguity.
Miss Sixty - The Miss Sixty show kicked it up a notch with Chloë Sevigny, Ashley Olsen, Milla Jovovich, and Anne Hathaway making their appearance. All about shiny, happy people as in a sixties psychedelia- fun for everyone. Peace signs in DayGlo colors matched the mood and the designs kept things groovy. Models took to the runway in standout tights, chunky leather belts, and shaggy fur.
Baby Phat - Drawing the likes of Tyra Banks and Vivica Fox, Baby Phat's Kimora Lee Simmons took an art-deco turn with a modern-day flapper look. That's modern retro, cloche hats and plumed skirts and it kept the crowd smiling as the models stormed the runway. BCBG - This show got Joss Stone and Sophia Bush watching with what was defined as refined café au lait-toned jersey dresses and drapy, one-shouldered frocks. For big girls who want an edge (perfect distressed leather belts included) there was also mixing satin and silk with leather for wearable instead of wishful.
And Then Some
Jayson Brunsdon - A somewhat new designer at Fashion Week, nevertheless the theory behind the fashion is just right. Jayson Brunsdon, an Australian designer label, is aimed at the woman who takes an emotive pleasure in the appreciation of modern elegance with a whiff of cinematic drama. Styles were inspired by the lives and looks of iconic women of great individual style, day and evening wear, expect an aura of contemporary glamour.
Tracy Reese - Tracy Reese added some color to her collection. Much needed to brighten up the rainy days in New York during Fashion week. On the offering dresses, you can flirt in with floaty fabrics that look good on models, but that will also look good on the common civilian trendsetter too.
Araks/Mara Hoffman - The Araks/Mara Hoffman show was combined, so if you didn't like one you would still like the other, literally. Araks got the crowd going for those that wanted neutrals (again) and baggy with glasses that said smart, but not much more. Mara Hoffman, the opposite of Araks said one word - pretty. Gray and black again, but feminine.
E.Fethers - Touted as the belle of the ball this fashion week, E.Fethers, as one person said was "the anointed hipster goddess" of the moment. The clothes are girly and easy to wear, but if you wear more than a size 0, you might not agree. Good for your daughter, maybe not good for the fully developed woman.
