Cars, Cars and More Luxury
By Rita Cook

Do you have a wish list for the next car you drive? I do! Actually, I have a few on my wish list from the Mercedes Benz SL550 Roadster to the Lincoln Navigator to the Chrysler Pacifica to the Volvo XC70. They are all different, but all meet the needs of today's driver in different ways. Of course, if you have a cool $100,000 then go for the Roadster anytime, but otherwise take a look at what else you can buy for your money these days.
Mercedes Benz SL 550 Roadster
Always a head turner, the Mercedes SL 550 Roadster owns the road - period. There is a retractable aluminum hardtop that folds in mere seconds and you can always count on impeccable handling with the Active Body Control and Electronic Stability Program. Depending on the package, you get all kinds of goodies from gearshift paddles to 18" AMG twin-spoke Aluminum-Alloy wheels, Xenon headlamps and wood or leather shift knobs and steering wheels. Sporty yes, but always luxurious or you can opt for the V12 model, the SL600 version. You will also notice discreet changes that have been made to the Roadster, but it certainly does not change performance, looks or the "just plain fun" ratio that this Mercedes offers in spades.
What to Know: With a 5.5-liter, 382-horsepower, V-8 engine you get a seven-speed automatic transmission and a touch shift that is reminiscent of racing. In fact, some reports state you can take this car up to speeds of 150 with no problem, not surprising since it is Mercedes.
Miles Per Gallon: Up to 14 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway.
Cost: Starting at $95,575 you can go higher for more of the fun options.
Chrysler Pacifica
For 2007, Pacifica got a facelift, and a nice one for both the interior and exterior. You will find a new hood, fenders, headlights, and grille along with an outside that includes 17-inch wheels and dual chrome exhaust tips. What's not to love? Roomy enough for six you can choose from three different levels from the base, the Touring, or the Limited trim. Another plus, all-wheel drive is optional and four-wheel-disc antilock brakes are standard too.
What to Know: With 2007, you can expect a 4.0-liter V6 engine and that is with a four-speed automatic transmission. You get 205 horsepower and 235 pounds-feet of torque as well and all the Pacificas have the AutoStick, which means drivers get to select their gears as needed. Only other mention, safety, five airbags and an electronic stability system goes along way in keeping everything safe to and then some.
Miles per Gallon: You can get 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.
Cost: Anywhere from 24,500 to $35,800, depending on trim level.
Volvo XC70
It's a wagon, but it's a Volvo wagon so already that ups the "must have" quota. Otherwise, think all weather minus the "SUV everybody's got one" thing nowadays. Great comfort, lots of cargo space and a redone set of alloy wheels and exterior mirrors. You will also find a dual-screen rear entertainment system and bi-xenon headlights if you so choose. Safety-first features are the antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, anti-whiplash front head restraints, and Volvo's OnCall telematics.
What to Know: The engine is a 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline five-cylinder, 208 horsepower with 236 pound-feet of torque. It's of the five-speed automatic transmission variety and its all-wheel-drive with 16-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack, a dual-zone automatic climate control feature and, not to forget to mention the leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with audio controls.
Miles per Gallon: Not bad at 18 miles per gallon in the city and about 25 miles per gallon on the highway.
Cost: I drove a model that came in at $41,800, but sticker price on some is as low as $36,420.
