One Mom's Mission to Make Every Day Earth Day
By Laura Barnaby

Kathy Arnos, producer, host and editor of Whole Children, Whole Planet Expo and Eco Family News, is gearing up for this year's big 40th anniversary Earth Day extravaganza in the San Fernando Valley, slated to be the largest FREE natural parenting and family event teaching people of all ages how to be healthy, and green.

We caught up with Arnos at her Van Nuys office to find out more about this one-day event scheduled for April 24th at Highland Hall Waldorf School in Northridge from 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Q. What is Whole Children, Whole Planet?

A. WCWP Expo is a premier natural family expo whose purpose is to introduce and educate people of all ages about the benefits of sustainable living practices, holistic medicine, non-toxic products, organic foods, better nutrition and enrichment learning programs. Our mission is to educate the community about important health and environmental issues and provide people with the resources and tools necessary to protect their families and the planet.

Q. Now in its third year, what can people expect at this year's expo?

A. I'm so excited because we have some amazing speakers giving free lectures throughout the day, including celebrities such as Amy Brenneman, Rachelle Carson Begley, Anna Getty and Josie Maran; natural and environmental health experts, including members of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, medical doctors, nutrition guru's and many others.

Speakers will share information on a variety of subjects, including water conservation, gardening, plastics pollution, creating a safe, non-toxic environment, vaccines, natural solutions for autism and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), childhood obesity and more. People can sign up online at www.wcwpexpo.com/schedule.html

Q. What about activities for the kids (and young at heart)?

A. There will be movement classes; yoga (for all ages); games; interactive performances and our famous Enrichment Village sponsored by Educational Enrichment Experiences; Project Okurase and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD). The village will feature the Bee Catchers; Powerful's drumming; plus Wooley Walls, urban worms, crafts, henna tattoos, hooping and the Cola Kayak.

Q. What are some of the other highlights attendees can expect?

A. There is a Mom Lounge - a nursing and changing area with round table discussions about attachment parenting practices and some advice from the Sexy Mom Expert Allana Pratt; a yoga lounge sponsored by Heal and Soul; 70 exhibitors showcasing green, healthy products - no green-washing here - organic foods without sugar and a main stage with special surprise guests.

Q. I see you are asking the public to kick the plastic water bottle habit and bring a reusable bottle (or buy one there). What prompted this request?

A. We are facing a huge problem in our environment - plastics! They do not go away. They do not break down. They are polluting our landfills, destroying our oceans and marine life, corrupting our food chain and disrupting our health. And while some people believe tap water is safe for drinking, I'm still not convinced and feel water filtration is the way to go.

Q. In the past, WCWP has been a paid event. Why did you decide to make it a FREE community event this year?

A. With the current state of our economy and global environmental crisis, I felt it was important to give this gift of knowledge to the community for free. In navigating the new green and healthful landscape, people need to be careful in making educated decisions about what is truly healthy and sustainable. Our event acts as a clearinghouse for factual information, giving people answers for safe solutions.

Q. How does one Valley mom put something like this together?

A. With the help and support of a lot of people! Our partnerships include media sources such as CBS-2, KCAL-9, KOST 103.5FM; local and national magazines, including Valley Scene; Whole Foods Market; Hugo's Restaurants; our Main Stage sponsors: Gen7, So Cal Ford Dealers, LifeSource Water, AQMD and Northridge East Neighborhood Council; our workshop sponsors: Episencial, New Century Cookware, Earth Mama and Angel Baby; all the exhibitors, great office support, guardian angels, and a lot of prayer.

From Blueberry Muffins to Cheese Raviolis, Quiche to Double Chocolate Fudge, our hands-on workshops focus on cooking from scratch using fresh, seasonal ingredients and time tested culinary techniques.

Our goal is to provide a safe, fun and educational environment where campers can learn to read recipes, cook and bake, work safely in a kitchen, and explore creative food ideas in meal preparation while encouraging a lifelong appreciation for healthy eating.

At Cooking Camp campers don't just sit around and observe, everyone participates and feels a sense of delicious accomplishment.

Our instructors are talented chefs who love working with kids and young teens. Imagine having a culinary arts expert sharing their passion and depth of experience with your child!
