CHICAGO THE MUSICAL Razzle Dazzles at the PANTAGES THEATRE
Catch a Bit of Broadway in LA
By Debra Graff

Top notch performers from the original Broadway show, highlight this superb production of CHICAGO, the Tony Award Winning Musical about sin, corruption, and all that jazz in the 1920's, starring multiple Grammy winner/actress(formerly of Destiny's Child), Michelle T. Williams (Aida, The Color Purple) as Roxie Hart; Terra C. MacLeod (West Side Story, Kiss of the Spider Woman)as Velma Kelly; Brent Barrett (Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, Annie Get Your Gun)as Billy Flynn; Carol Woods (The Full Monty, Follies) as Matron "Mama" Morton; Tom Riis Farrell (Coram Boy, Dirty Blonde) as Amos Hart; and R. Lowe (Carmen, Marriage of Figaro) as Mary Sunshine.
The outstanding choreography in the style of Bob Fosse, by Tony Award Winner, Ann Reinking, recreated by Gary Chryst, is nothing less than astonishing. Everything in this national touring production is first rate from the striking sets by designer John Lee Beatty (The Color Purple, Doubt), to the eye-catching costumes by Tony award winner, William Ivey Long (Grey Gardens, Hairspray). From Fosse's signature jazz hands and isolations, to the spectacular costumes accentuated by fishnets and corsets, you will be mesmerized from the first number, 'All That Jazz' (in tribute to original director/choreographer/writer Fosse) to the finale. The orchestra is onstage the entire time becoming part of the show, interacting with the actors. The dramatic dancing is unbelievably stunning, the epitome of perfection.
The magnificent music and lyrics by the spectacular team of John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman), offer several standout numbers including 'When You're Good To Mama,' performed flawlessly by vocalist/actress Woods, who wows the audience with her powerful voice and commanding presence. Her singing seems effortless, the sign of a true talent, as she belts out the words, scatting and jazz riffing while the crowd cheers In true jazz form, her voice becomes every instrument in the orchestra with a deep richness, pure tone and impeccable timing.
R. Lowe's awesome soprano libretto gets everyone's attention, and when the notes are held for what seems like minutes, everyone gasps and goes wild. The role's running comedic gag is a welcome addition. Farrell's version of 'Mister Cellophane,' is endearing and charming, as he embodies Roxie's shy, insecure husband.
Barrett's amazing vocal range and command of the stage is a natural fit for his role as the suave lawyer. He lights up the stage in 'Razzle Dazzle,' which lives up to its moniker when strobe lights encircle the theatre and sparkles fall from the ceiling, thanks to delightful lighting design by Tony winner, Ken Billington (Sunday in the Park with George, Drowsy Chaperone).
Woods told me she's grateful for the opportunity, "eight times a week, to escape into a world of mystery and excitement. We have a good old time." Woods says the Pantages is a "beautiful art deco theatre, the nostalgia and history, intriguing." She loves the staff, crew, and cast, calling them her family. "We spend a lot of time together. Fortunately, we love each other. We all work hard to keep up the integrity of the show." She credits the producers, Fran and Barry Weissler (Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy) for keeping it going, saying "We must do our best to make that happen."
Barrett likes playing the role of Billy Flynn who's "such a slick totally in control character. I wish I had half his confidence, with more heart." Because the Pantages is much larger than a Broadway house, Barrett explains, "you have to be more physically expansive." As a seasoned pro, he's been playing this part on and off for several years. No wonder he seems so relaxed on stage. "Performing Billy is like riding a bicycle for me."
Producer, Barry Weissler says that Michelle Williams, "In addition to being a fantastic performer, is as delightful and genuine offstage as onstage. We're thrilled she's able to join our national tour for its third return engagement in LA."
