Edible Arrangements
By Susie Kopecky

The United States, England, Canada, Dubai, Puerto Rico and Saudi Arabia: these are just some of the nations in which Edible Arrangements can be found. Edible Arrangements was born of a fascinating concept: rather than give a beautiful gift to simply be admired, why not make that gift edible, too? All EA arrangements are composed of various fresh fruit selections, sometimes dipped in chocolate and coated with other sweet (and healthy) toppings. There are 881 stores worldwide.
There are over 100 Edible Arrangements stores in California alone, three of which are directly overseen by Patricia and Elias Younan. Patricia Younan is the President of the Thousand Oaks store and the president of Slice of Heaven Enterprises, Inc., and oversees the stores in Northridge (the first West Coast store) and Thousand Oaks, with another location recently opened in Camarillo.
Patricia put an emphasis on the importance of providing great experiences for customers. "It's all about customer service," Patricia explained. The reasons behind Edible Arrangements' success are threefold, Younan explained. "People are not wanting to waste the money on flowers anymore," and are looking for something "unique," something where the customer feels they are getting their money's worth, where they "know it's not sitting on a table, dying," Younan added. "We're never going to be perfect, the difference [between us and others] is, we're never going to ignore you." All orders are made fresh, on the day they are requested. For example, even if you order a basket on a Friday, for the following Tuesday, it won't be made until that Tuesday. Orders can be made online, in person or by phone, and all can be ready for pick-up or delivery.
The Thousand Oaks store is immaculately clean, and very high-tech. It is no surprise, then, that the Thousand Oaks store is ranked as one of the top ten Edible Arrangements stores in the nation. Customers who would like a better idea of what each bouquet looks like can view digital images of each basket, on a large-screen television on the wall. Ashley Giesseman, the customer service manager at the Thousand Oaks and Northridge locations, detailed some of the most popular selections. The Delicious Fruit Designs features pineapples cut into the shape of daisies, cantaloupe, honeydew melons, strawberries, grapes and chocolate. One of the most popular arrangements is the Melon Delight, which includes bananas dipped in chocolate and/or white chocolate. The arrangements vary in size, intricacy and price, with prices ranging from about $20 to $244, for arrangements such as the Delicious Party, which can serve 65 people.
A basket from Edible Arrange-ments can make the perfect gift for weddings, birthdays, Bar Mitz-vahs, graduations, and general gifts of appreciation, Giesseman pointed out. What may not be known, however, is that the most healthy lunch around can be purchased there. Fresh fruit salads are available for daily purchase, and depending on size, cost between $3.95 and $6.95.
The entire arrangement takes the designers only about one hour to do, which is amazing, considering the intricacy and personal touch in every arrangement.
Any location which serves fruit will try to play up the idea of only having the freshest fruit. At Edible Arrangements, the fruit really is fresh. The fruit is selected by a fruit broker, who obtains premium choice fruit, or the first pick. The fruit pieces look and smell fresh, and keep well after the arrangement has been opened. The pineapple is sweet and tangy, and the grapes and strawberries are juicy.
Patricia prides her organization in providing the highest quality, not only in their luscious product, but also in the customer service she and her staff offers. There are also themed arrangements for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day as well as all major holidays. Future locations will include Encino and Woodland Hills/Calabasas.
