An Emo-tional Cry for Attention
By Natalie Perez

The "It's Not a Fashion Statement; it's a Deathwish," title off My Chemical Romance's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004) release, clearly supplies and demands moral issues. This angst is part of a new movement: emo. Exactly what is emo? Is it a form of music, a trend sweeping the globe, or something with a much darker side altogether?
Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics.
In addition to music, "emo" is often used more generally to signify a particular relationship between fans and artists, and to describe related aspects of fashion, culture, and behavior.
Emo (short for emotional) has taken a new toll on the twentieth century of how to define yourself. The clothing takes it to a whole new level of expression. The clothing line runs from skin tight pants, to dying hair jet black for inspiration, spiking it to make it groovier or even just blanketing it gently across your face. Straight hair, tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and in some cases thick, black horn-rimmed glasses are also typical of the movement.
But it's not just looks that makes you a real emo, it goes much deeper into your heart, mind, and soul. With the form of music, a formula used in more ways than just one; musicians attempt to expand the listener's horizons as far out as possible.
Most people have used the emo lifestyle as a way to lash out their own feelings and emotions, especially teenagers. They may be experiencing problems at home dealing with money, family drama, being bullied at school, or even suicidal thoughts,
Some people look at emo in disgust. They think of it as subculture categories i.e. punks, Goths, and metal heads, all fused together wanting to express their rage and anger in the form of violence.
Are kids beating up an other kids because of the way they express themselves? There has to be a better solution. Depressed "emo" kids may take it too far. This can lead up to serious consequences like cutting, causing harm to the people round them and even suicide. If your child seems lost and depressed take notice! The emo movement is all about how these kids are trying to say their feelings and thoughts, but be careful and pay attention, as they could be crying out for help.
