Let your mind flow
By MJ Marks

Water features and table top fountains have become more popular in the last decade. Part of this is because the sound of water has long been known to be soothing and relaxing, and is often used during meditation. Many people enjoy the sound of running water in their daily lives. It can be heard in personal gardens, at local parks, at community fountains, or at large indoor fountains that many offices and businesses now use for a more feng shui feel to the work environment. Many doctor's and dentists especially find water features comforting to patients. The sound offers a bit of tranquility, and the fountain offers a touch of beauty to help set people at ease.

Regardless of the size of your house or yard, you can enjoy the soothing benefits of water in your own home. People have always tried to have some form of a water feature in our yard. In the first home we owned, we built a small water fall and pond. The sound was relaxing, and the kids enjoyed watching the fish. Where we live now, we have a small outdoor bubbler that the dog and cats think of as their personal water fountain. And my in-laws have a pondless waterfall which creates a beautiful sound and is often used by the local birds for a bath, and it provides endless enjoyment for those sitting nearby in the garden swing. But even if you do not have a yard, you can enjoy the sound of water with any of a variety of table top fountains.

Most table top fountains are small, designed to fit on an end table or coffee table. The different styles they come in is unlimited, something to suit most any taste. You can get ones that have water pouring from a single source into the fountain bowl, or it may have the water cascading down a series of rocks or ledges, there are table top fountains where the water cascades down a flat surface in a sheet, and you can find small bubblers where the water comes up through a hole in a rock and flows back down into the bowl.

Regardless of the type of water flow, some fountains offer other features as well, such a accent lighting or candles. Some have loose stones in the bowl that you can organize in a way that is pleasing to you.

Many of my favorite table top fountains have an Oriental design, others have a Tuscan flair, and you can even find ones that are quite modern in design. You can find one to match any decor, and they are suitable for many rooms in your home. You may like one in your living roomthat can be enjoyed by all who come to visit, or you may prefer one in an office or den to add tranquility to a work space. Many people will place one in their bedroom because the soothing sound of water helps them sleep at night.

Regardless of the style you prefer, or where you place one table top fountains can be a very pleasing addition to your home. The soothing sound of running water can do a lot to help you relax at the end of a busy day.
