Post Partum Stress Survival Tips for New Moms
By Hannah Bajor. C.N.M., M.S.N.

Post partum is part of pregnancy. It is the 6 to 8 weeks after having a baby. For a new mom these weeks can be a very stressful.

As a midwife I put a lot of thought and effort into my pregnancy and birthing experience. But none of my midwifery knowledge prepared me for the first few weeks after having a baby. For me the post partum part of pregnancy was very stressful and physically challenging. I had a long labor; every part of my body hurt and physically. I share with you some post partum stress reducing survival tips that made the end of my second pregnancy more enjoyable.

  • Arrange help for the household chores.
  • Stock your freezer with pre-cooked meals.
  • Schedule chiropractic adjustments during the first week.
  • Have a good supply of large sanitary napkins and adult diapers in your hospital bag and at home.
  • Sleep when your baby sleeps.
  • Don't be afraid to cry.
  • Supplement with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are breast-feeding safe.

Every organ and system in your body is under a lot of physical stress post partum as they attempt to return to their normal non pregnancy state. High quality vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are safe for breast-feeding will provide the foundation to prevent post partum complications and result in an overall a better pregnancy experience. After childbirth there is a rapid decrease in hormones that occurs approximately on the third, fifth and tenth day. These hormone adjustments can be emotionally challenging for the mother. You may cry for no apparent reason so let it out and know this is all part of a normal pregnancy post partum. Be prepared to be exhausted. Take every opportunity to sleep.

After pregnancy new moms will experience very heavy vaginal bleeding post partum and regular sanitary towels will not do the job. Most hospitals give new moms cheap sanitary towels post partum. This will also save your bed linen.

Pregnancy and childbirth moves many of your pelvic bones out of alignment. Use the expertise of your chiropractor to realign your pelvis, hips and back. This will definitely reduce post partum stress and expedite your post partum recovery. New moms get hungry at odd hours and it is not unusual to be too tired to cook. Believe me; you will be too exhausted to keep up with everything post partum. Don't be afraid to ask for help during your pregnancy or request maid cleaning gift certificates as a great baby shower gift.

Having a new baby is a wonderful time in a woman's life. Knowing the above plan ahead and think of ways to support yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually ahead of time before you are all consumed with your new baby.

Diane Mohlman - Trainer for Life
By Staff Writer

It's 6 a.m. The computer is making "that" sound. Not the sound of just typing; there's a rhythm and energy that makes it different. Today's message: "Don't think about it, just do it. Get out of your head, and onto your feet. Your mind is stronger than any muscle in your body."

"That" is the sound of Diane Mohlman, the driving force behind Burbank's Frenetic Fitness, and she is unlike any trainer I have ever met.

The first thing you notice when you meet Diane is her body. She is stunning and in amazing shape. Surprisingly, it hasn't always been this way.

"I gained 70 pounds carrying my first child" she begins, "I remember thinking 'Is there still a baby in there?' (For the record, she has four children.)

I thought 'How am I going to lose this? It won't come off.' You can't think that. You go to work, eat right, and then it comes off. Then you think 'Oh my goodness! It's a miracle!' But it's not a miracle.'

So what is it? "The only real way that I know of to get to a healthy place and stay there is to make it a lifestyle. Do the work and your body has to respond. It's a great feeling!"

She describes fitness as a path you travel while life happens around you. While dieting can disrupt your life, a healthy lifestyle will enhance it. It feels good!

"Best of all, looking good is an amazing side effect of feeling good. We work to feel good. The looking good can't really be helped."

This no nonsense approach typifies Diane's training philosophy. It's clear she puts in the work. However, once she shares her fire, passion, and energy you start to believe...no, you know, that you can achieve this with her guidance and motivation.

Why? Because she will make sure of it. "Now that I figured out how to do this for myself" she says, "I'm determined to show others how to do it too."

Diane continues "personal training is extremely personal. You have to be sensitive to that fact. You are talking not only about someone's well being, but you are also exposing some very sensitive issues for people. You are talking about someone's fat!"

"Don't work hard, work smart" right? Diane believes that working hard is working smart when it comes to getting in shape. Don't kill yourself, but you have to do something. "It starts with a single step. No matter how much I'd like to, I can't take that step for you."

With so many personal trainers around what makes Diane different? She has amazing credentials; ISSA Certified Elite Trainer, Certified Fitness Therapist, Certified Specialist in Performance Nutrition, Certified Youth Fitness Trainer, plus ongoing training.

But she is more than that. You hear it in her voice; you see it in her body language. You can't envision her doing anything else. Her knowledge and passion are infectious. You want to do it too.

Diane challenges her clients. Without challenge there is no real accomplishment. She believes that pushing beyond your current limits brings confidence that carries over into all areas of your life.

"It's the only way to really change lives. Together we find your limits and then push through them. There is no greater feeling than seeing a person redefine what they are capable of on a daily basis."

But not without fun. With all the work they must enjoy the process. "Sometimes working out is hard. I'm not going to say it's easy. I can tell you this though, it will be worth it! And we laugh a lot. You have to! I love spending time with my clients. They have become my friends."

Once you start the guided path to health you will quickly realize it was your life before Diane that was hard.

Some clients have anointed her "Trainer for Life." "What else am I going to do?" she laughs. "This is my love, my fire, my passion. I will try something else in the next life." For now she seems to be doing just what she was born to do.
