Fourth of July Family Festival Schedule
By Alan Haskvitz
Celebrating the Independence of the United States of America by watching symbolic fireworks is a tradition and doing so at a safe venue is a rite of passage as well as a teachable moment. Although celebrated since it was signed in 1776, it was not until 1870 that Congress established Independence Day as a holiday in 1870 and in 1938 Congress reaffirmed it as a holiday.
There are some unusual facts associated with the holiday starting with the irony that both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the 50th anniversary of the Fourth. There is also the reality that most founding fathers signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776, and not on the Fourth. Although not a signer of the Declaration, President James Monroe also died on the Fourth while President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th.
Listed below is a variety of places to commemorate this historic holiday in family friendly surroundings. Remember to check with sponsors for possible changes.
