Northridge Spring Carnival
The Annual Northridge Spring Carnival's Celebration of Academic Excellence offers rewards to hardworking students and discounts to families! The Carnival is April 24-26 at 18355 Roscoe at Reseda Blvd. The first 100 students who bring report cards from the 2008-09 school year with "A" or "B" in core subjects will get a day of FREE rides! Qualifying students will also be given a certificate of recognition and a medal.
This year's event offers substantial discounts. The discount tickets can only be purchased in advance and must be picked up no later than April 23. The pre-sale discount is 10 tickets for $15.
Also new is recommendations to choose the carnival's Academic Star and Community Star. In addition to the free rides for the day, these two special students will receive prizes valued at $250.
Recommendations from teachers, coaches, community leaders help distinguish the children.

California Kitchen Garden Class at Descanso Gardens
Learn how to grow fresh produce in your own backyard.
Horticultural enthusiast John Lyons offers an overview on how to install and maintain an organic California kitchen garden from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 21 at Descanso Gardens.
This hands-on course includes topics: soil development, raised beds, companion planting, composting and organic pest control. In addition, effective seasonal planting choices will also be discussed.

Established as a public garden in 1954, Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, near the interchange of the 2 and 210 freeways. A popular setting for weddings, parties and meeting in addition to being a location for numerous feature films and television shows, the Gardens are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Parking is free. Admission fees are $8 for adults; $6 for seniors and students; $3 for children 5 to 12, and free for members and children 5 and younger.
