Highland Hall moves 35,000 Mulberry Tree
By Staff Writer

An once-in-a-lifetime event recently took place at Highland Hall Waldorf School in Northridge, Ca. The community stood in awe as they witnessed the moving of a 40 foot tall by 40 foot wide, 35000lbs, beloved Mulberry tree. No one is exactly sure when this tree was planted, but estimates are that it is 30-40 years old. Highland Hall is located in the heart of Northridge on 11 acres of land in a residential neighborhood and has been there since 1967.
With plans for a new theater building to be built where the tree was standing, the school wanted to do something that would honor this tree. Should they cut it down and use the wood for elements in their new garden? They pondered what it would take to actually have the tree moved. A parent of an alumni owns Senna Tree Company, (a company that happens to be the world record holder for moving the largest tree ever), so they called them out to give us a quote. The parents were inspired to raise the money to move the tree. They were grateful to be able to receive a large donation from the Hard Rock Café. However, there was still $1,000 needed to meet the goal and time was running out. An appeal was put out to the school community and they were able to raise the money within the week! The tree company was called and the date was set.
When the tree company arrived, word was sent out and a crowd gathered to watch the big event. The tree was fastened to the crane and all was ready. All held their breath as the great tree was gently lifted out of the ground. Exclamations of awe could be heard as the tree was lifted higher and higher, gently swaying, but kept steady by people on the ground holding ropes tied to the branches. It was ever so carefully guided until it was sitting squarely on the back of the truck. The crowd broke into applause. Someone then climbed into the tree and unhooked the crane, the tree was driven 125 feet to its new location, hooked up to the crane again and, after some brief discussion, was planted with the same orientation it had had in the previous location. All cheered! It looked beautiful. Many commented that it looked as if it had always been there.
A common question that was asked was, "What are the chances that this tree will survive?" Although there is not a definitive answer, there are several encouraging factors; the tree company has a high success rate on all their trees, mulberry trees are very hardy and grow quickly, they moved the tree while it was still dormant, and the weather was kind. It was wonderfully misty and rained that night! And, of course, this tree has and will continue to receive a great deal of love and attention.
SafetyTat
By Staff Writer

The idea for SafetyTat temporary child ID tattoos was born of necessity one weekend at an amusement park. On Labor Day Weekend, Baltimore Mom, Michele Welsh and her husband, were there with their three small children, and felt out-numbered. To stave her panic, she quickly wrote her mobile phone number on each of their arms with a ballpoint pen. As she did this, she thoughtfully explained to each of them the importance of staying close to Mommy and Daddy. She also told them that if they were separated that the number on their arm was a way to reconnect with them.
Throughout the day of fun, Michele had to rewrite the number several times as it smeared or washed off. Several parents in the park stopped her to ask if that was her number on the kids' arms. Each time, they loved the idea.
The day was a success and the idea for SafetyTat temporary child id
tattoos was born.
It can happen anywhere--at an amusement park such as what Michele discovered, a zoo, school field trip, or even your local shopping mall. Your attention shifts for a moment, and suddenly your child or loved one has wandered out of sight.
