| World Blood Donor Day

Many Americans consider giving blood to be important, however less than 10 percent donate on an annual basis. If just one percent more donated - less than four million Americans - our blood shortages would disappear. Nexcare Brand and America's Blood Centers are partnering on the second annual give program, a nationwide blood donation initiative kicking off on World Blood Donor Day, June 14th, and extending through June 20th.
With the support of hundreds of local blood centers, including our local center in Thousand Oaks, the give program inspires Americans with a message of hope, and helps them to spread the word by distributing limited-edition Nexcare Bandages marked with the word give.
As local blood centers face "summer shortages," the nation's blood supply comes under strain due to increased vacation schedules.
The 2010 Give Bandages are inspired by both the act of giving blood as well as Flag Day. This collection of three Nexcare bandages signify the everyday hero in each American.
Additionally, their dedicated website, www.nexcaregive.com, is where visitors can share their story, get directions to local blood centers and register to receive coupons and a free sampling of bandages.
Did You Know? One pint of blood can save three lives. Every two seconds, someone needs blood. Most Americans will require a blood transfusion at some point. Less than 10% of Americans donate blood a year. There is no substitute for human blood. Donors can give blood up to six times a year

"Heritage Days" Civil War Reenactment Comes To Woodland Hills

Reenacting the American Civil War began even before the real fighting had ended. Civil War veterans recreated battles as a way to remember their fallen comrades and to teach others what the war was all about. The Great Reunion of 1913, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, was attended by more than 50,000 Union and Confederate veterans, and included reenactments of elements of the battle. Modern reenacting began during the 1961-1965 Civil War centennial commemorations.
This year, The Civil War springs to life at Pierce Farm Center on June 12-13 with hundreds of re-enactors that will recreate the epic conflict of the American Civil War on the broad fields of Pierce College. The two day celebrated event will go from 10 am to 5pm with different demonstrations every hour.
Visitors will view exciting cavalry charges, artillery barrages, and infantry assaults that were part of America's watershed event, one that transformed a mere union of states into a nation!
Throughout each day, demonstrations and presentations will take place, including Victorian dancing, military drill, and skills and crafts from the era.
Historical notables from the past will address all of those present, and President Lincoln will give his famous Gettysburg Address as part of a grand "Living History" program.
