Men's Fashion Tips: The Go-to Neckties
By Hendrik Pohl

Neckties are ideally owned en masse, but having a wide selection can also have its share of downsides. Just imagine yourself dressing up for work in the morning with everything done and only the selection of a necktie left for you to accomplish. When you're dealing with a collection that's anywhere above a dozen, making that choice in seconds isn't easy. Here are three tie choices that never fail, just so you can get to work in time.
Bold Silk
A silk necktie is one of the primary pillars of any business wardrobe. In fact, fashion for the typical office puts great importance on the role on the classic style of silk tie. When you're rushing out the door on a workday morning and scrambling to choose a single tie from the multitudes in your closet, it's hard to go wrong with a boldly colored one in silk.
Strong and deep colors like burgundy or plum in the red family, or purple or indigo in the blues make for foolproof style choices when you're in a hurry. To notch your style up a little further, go for lighter shades like pale pink or lilac, but only wear those over a solid or coordinated shirt to keep your outfit put-together. Note that the latter takes much more guts to wear, especially since many typically see them as 'feminine' colors.
If you're ballsy enough to take this to the extreme, though, pick out a power tie in any of the usual power tie colors like rouge red or royal blue. Even today, power ties are still fairly effective when it comes to projecting influence. However, it's not ideal to bring this style to work unless you actually call one of the corner offices with a view your own.
Slim Black
There are days when you're in so much of a hurry that you don't care about fashion rules and color matching anymore - you just want something that'll work with the clothes you already have on. Fortunately, men's fashion can provide you with just a thing: the classic and ever ubiquitous slim black necktie.
No man - fashion-conscious or otherwise - should enter the workforce without at least one piece of the style fix-all that is the slim black necktie. Whether you're wearing it over a v-neck tee for a rave party or over a crisp Charvet shirt for a society wedding, the black-tie will always pull through for you. Regardless of the occasion, formality and other style pieces you decide to throw in with it, a slim black tie will simply work.
Your own slim black tie should be in high quality silk, both because it would make for a better-looking tie and because you want some longevity in your fashion. It's better to own one piece that'll last you a decade than ten pieces that'll only survive for half a year each.
Neutral Knit
And then there are the knit ties. Although they're a fairly new entry in the men's fashion arena, knit neckties have enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame in the last decade. Nowadays, they're about as common as the next silk tie. That's a good thing for you too, as the knit tie is an option that's always safe (more or less) but never boring.
Interest is one of the weak points of business attire; even when you're sporting the latest styles from the hottest designers, people will go ho-hum because all your ensembles look so much alike. A knit tie solves that by adding some much needed depth and texture to your look. Traditionally solid and contemporary printed shirts alike can most likely look great when worn with a knit necktie.
The trick might not always work for you, as you have to balance the depths and visual weights of all your pieces. At the very least, though, you're assured of an interesting looking outfit that has more to say about you than the next guy about him. You've got to admit, that's pretty good for a style piece that took you all of 10 seconds to think about and then pick out from your closet.
