Should You Get Health Insurance For Pets?
By Jeff D McQueen

A few years back, when pets became too sick, they were usually put to rest. Surgery, transplants, even chemotherapy were treatments that could have saved their lives, but they were rarely used on them. Flash forward to the present and one hears about pets whose lives were prolonged after their owners had them treated using the advanced medicine practices mentioned earlier. Not only did veterinary medicine progress in leaps and bounds in the recent years, the existence of health insurance for pets made it possible for concerned pet owners to purchase plans that would guarantee that their pets are always taken care of. For those who are attached to their pets and are willing to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to make sure they are well, getting health insurance for their beloved pets is actually the cheaper alternative.
The stigma that often accompanies the idea of "insurance" scares off many pet owners. In their minds, health for pets is just like insurance for people, objects, and properties. They believe that they are expensive, confusing, and sometimes, unnecessary. The truth could not be further from that assumption. Health insurance for pets actually saves the pet owner some money.
For example, one pet owner purchased insurance for her dog for a monthly fee of $11 for accidents. When her dog broke a leg after it tried to jump a fence, the owner was reimbursed for the $350 bill that she was charged in the veterinary clinic. There is another case of a parent who purchased insurance for his daughter's pet for $38.50 per month. The pet was diagnosed with a rare form of lupus that only affected dogs. Treatment was very expensive but because of the insurance, the parent was paid almost two thousand dollars in claims.
Health insurance for pets is a safeguard that no matter what happens to one's pet, they can get the treatment they need and the owner can save money in return. Most companies that of health insurance for pets charge a premium of less than a hundred dollars per month, depending on the services that one gets. What owners should always keep in mind is to exhaustively research about the companies and their coverage so that they can get the best insurance for their pets.
There are also some pet owners who worry that applying for health insurance for pets is a complex process. True, there are requirements, but most companies are very accommodating and most offer easy ways to sign up. In the end, what pet owners should think about is whether they prefer to leave their pets' health to chance or whether they want to always know that their pets are going to be fine. Pet health insurance saves money and makes a pet owner less worried about his pets' health, knowing that the pet is covered by an insurance policy.
