Fun, Friends, Frolic
By Bonnie Leland

Have you ever wondered, "Who are those women in the red hats and purple dresses?" They seem to be everywhere. At fairs and festivals, restaurants and tea rooms, museums and concerts, their elaborate red hats and purple outfits invariably elicit supportive comments and requests for photographs from the crowd. These ladies are members of The Red Hat Society®, an organization begun ten years ago by Sue Ellen Cooper in Fullerton, California. There are over seventy chapters of the Red Hat Society® in the San Fernando Valley. Chapters number 35,000 in over 30 countries.

Red Hat ladies are typically women over the age of fifty who appreciate the opportunity to savor life with their sisters. Each chapter enjoys monthly (or more frequent) outings to the many outstanding entertainment venues available to them. Chapters often invite other chapters to join them in their events. Friendships flower. Networking is maximized. And women do what women have always done best; build a supportive, caring community. As one chapter leader recently noted, "Aging is part of life, but we are doing it our way. We are vibrant, wise, and empowered women who thoroughly enjoy our lives."

On Sunday, October 26, 2008, women in the San Fernando Valley will have a unique opportunity to meet Red Hat ladies at the Red Hat Holiday Craft Faire and Meet and Greet to be held at the Masonic Lodge located at 14750 Sherman Way (near Kester), Van Nuys. Between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM., assorted hand-crafted and other treasures (not official products of the Red Hat Society®) will be available for purchase, along with beverages and snacks. Two dining areas will allow everyone to mix and mingle, people-watch, and just relax. This faire will provide a perfect opportunity to meet Red Hat ladies and obtain information about the many and varied on-going chapter events in the San Fernando Valley.

After a lifetime of raising children, working hard, and having way too much on their "to do" lists, thousands of women have decided that it is time for them to honor themselves by creating a space for fun and frolic. You can join them. For more information, contact The Red Hat Society® at:
