The Jorg Gray JG6500 Commemorative Watch
By Bruce Wildstein

Wouldn't it be great to wear the same watch as an American President that is
both luxurious looking and affordable? Fact is, some of our past Presidents have worn very pedestrian watches while in office or have had watch collections featuring timepieces that were highly limited in production and cost well into the thousands. On the other hand, our current President, Barack Obama, wears a watch that is handsome, hip, and affordable for much of the public. The watch is the Jorg Gray JG6500, and there is an interesting back-story regarding how he came to acquire it.

Jorg Gray is a 10-year-old American private-label watch company that has sold its watches through its own distribution channels until recently. Sometime before the last election, the company's founder and owner, Trevor Gnesin, created a limited-edition watch that was to be sold only to members of the U.S. Secret Service. Apparently, they had become admirers of the Jorg Gray line. This watch, the 6500, had the official seal of the Secret Service imprinted on the dial and sold out quickly due to its very small edition of only 50. President Obama, then Senator Obama, eventually received one of the exclusive timepieces for his 46th birthday. Photographs of the Senator wearing the watch began to surface at various times during his Presidential campaign. And after winning the historic election, President Obama was again photographed wearing the watch at the Inaugural Ball and while signing bills into law. Watch enthusiasts were perplexed by the make and model until word leaked out about its origin, which created a demand.

Realizing that a phenomenon was occurring, Jorg Gray decided that a special commemorative edition of the watch was in order. The new JG6500 was thus introduced. Identical to the original version, but without the Secret Service seal, this watch has an inscribed case back marking the inauguration of President Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States and has its own unique serial number.

Designed with what is known as a tri-compax dial arrangement, the JG6500 timepiece features a 24 hour indicator, continuous seconds dial, and elapsed time chronograph, all set against a smart black face. But this is no elitist four-figure watch; with a price of just $325 it's available and affordable to most anyone. And although it is just now rolling out to select stores around the country, it can be bought online at www.jorggray.com and www.barackswatch.com. The JG6500 is made in a black, silver, bronze, or rose-gold finish, and like other watches in the line is available with several types of leather straps.

Jorg Gray makes a complete line of over 100 watch styles for both men and women. Every model is made with either a brushed or polished stainless steel case. A scratch resistant mineral crystal lens is used with either a Japanese or Swiss movement. Serial numbers are laser engraved to ensure authenticity and the strap buckle is engraved with the Jorg Gray logo. Other models in the line include the JG1040 series, which features dual timekeeping and a retrograde calendar. The JG1600/1100 chronograph series features the tri-compax dial arrangement plus a turning bezel. The JG1850 series features Roman numerals plus day of the week and date displays. The JG7300 series features an automatic movement with second hand inset dial and 22 jewels. Depending on the model, straps are available in Italian crocodile, calf leather, Italian buffalo leather, or precision black rubber. Some models feature a square case and/or colored dials and numbers, something for most anyone's taste. All Jorg Gray watches are water resistant and have a manufacturer's warranty. Prices start at just $250.
