New Kundalni Yoga Classes in the San Fernando Valley

What is Kundalini Yoga? True. Kundalini yoga does incorporate many postures familiar to people who practice other forms of yoga. Yes. Kundalini yoga does emphasize a healthy lifestyle with focus on more than just the physical aspects of our bodies. But, where kundalini yoga begins to differ is with its focus on breath (pranayama) and meditation. It is an inward practice so much of a typical kundalini yoga class is spent with eyes closed, trying to quiet the mind from its constant chatter and focusing on breath that we are inhaling and exhaling all while practicing yogic postures (asanas).

In kundalini yoga, the emphasis is not so much on perfecting the physical postures, but on focusing internally and learning to quiet the mind. The physical exercises of this yoga are intended to raise the kundalini (latent energy at the base of our spine) to the top of the head (crown chakra) in order to help us meditate and reach enlightenment. No prior yoga experience is needed and you need not be in peak physical form to practice this. There are always modifications announced for exercises being performed. The focus is not to compete with others, or be in pain, but to be kind to yourself and do what you are able to at that given moment.

This form of yoga was brought to the West in 1969 by an Indian yogi named Yogi Bhajan. For thousands of years, this practice was not shared or taught openly and was reserved for very few people. Yogi Bhajan broke this centuries-old code because he felt it was time to share this with others openly. He felt people were hungry for more than the beliefs and information they had been given and taught for years and that it was time for people to take charge and realize their inborn connection to the Universe and its energy. It was time for people to come back to basics and tune out so much of the noise they were infiltrated with daily and tune into themselves.

Of course, along with spiritual benefits, kundalini yoga does offer well being on a physical level including increased flexibility, lengthening of the muscles, balancing of the nervous and glandular systems as well as helping to work on many organs in the body.

If all of this does not convince you then why not spare an hour and half or so out of an evening and give this a try one night? The best way to learn is to give it a shot and decide for yourself if this is something you feel would be beneficial to you.

Current class schedules for Kundalini Yoga with Tamera are:
Mondays, 6 - 7 p.m. at BodyWorks Studio, 10207 Sepulveda Blvd., Mission Hills, CA
Thursdays, 8:15-9:30 p.m. at The Yoga Loft, 21228 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills, CA
Class cost is $15. Class packages are available at reduced rates.
