Fashion, Music, and Art Come Together for Project Ethos Pop Universe Event
By Chrystal Ann Heidemann
On Friday, September 26, the bi-annual Project Ethos red carpet event was held at the Avalon Nightclub in Hollywood. The theme of this year's party was "Pop Universe," and combined mediums of music, dance, art, and fashion. With highlights including a performance from the electro-rap duo, LMFAO, and a fashion show opened by the fiery dance troupe, Groovaholix, and headlined by the defiant punk clothing label S.Y.C F.U.K - the event was an entertaining way to showcase new talent and vendors, while successfully showing the influence that 80s style has had on today's culture.
The night definitely got started when LMFAO came to the stage. These two guys are like the modern day Kid 'n Play. Their songs are fun to dance to, quite hilarious, and they know how to get a crowd excited. LMFAO was a main attraction of the evening. Their song, "I'm In Miami, Trick," has been getting airplay in Los Angeles clubs, and has recently been played on Power 106, and other stations around the country. If you haven't heard of them yet, you will very soon.
Next was the fashion show, featuring a variety of designers: most bold, some bland, and one with a pure elegance flair. It did start to drag a bit, but the energy picked up with Bucky Bakes' S.Y.C F.U.K line. Bakes' models were an accessory throughout the party both before and after the show. They stood out while mingling among the crowd, and when they took the runway, they dominated.
The S.Y.C F.U.K (Street Youth Couture, From Unwanted Kids) collection is rock-inspired, and feisty. Bakes' describes his style as "being expressed through the physics of life, with the balance of positive and negative factors." He began his fashion career making clothing for a band that he was in. Other bands in the Los Angeles scene saw his work and started requesting custom pieces. With this "hobby" occupying all of his free time, he decided to make a career out of it, and started his own line.
S.Y.C F.U.K has been worn by celebrities and bands including Buckcherry, illusionist Criss Angel, Motley Crue, Pamela Anderson, Scorpions, and Papa Roach.
After the fashion show, attendees dispersed to their choice of five bars, while the chairs and runway were cleared for the dance party. Upstairs, guests shuffled and socialized their way around two rooms of colorful art.
An artist that truly stood out was Jason Lee. His clothing line, Subrage, was also featured in the fashion show, and the main draw in his show was the prints on the clothing, rather than the form and textures of the pieces.
Lee is an amazing talent with highly detailed work that's dark, sexy, and full of fantasy. Mostly character pieces, his style is similar to video game art, but his technique is unique and identifiable, and holds emotion.
Lee's bio reads: "I am here to become a leader in the progression of art, through training as a skilled master by striving to create the undeniable beauty of art, which will silence any visual critic by commanding respect in its truest form in each and every piece."
Lee is also an art consultant for companies, helping them build their brand.
The rest of the night consisted of a dance party with DJs spinning a mixture of 80s and current hits. A "Glow-in-the-Dark VIP Party" was going on in the restaurant portion of the venue, but it was dead. The main ballroom was the place to be. The party started to leave early, around 1:00, but overall the event was well organized and a wild success for everyone involved.
Project Ethos holds these events every two years with the purpose to fuse together the Mainstream and Indie worlds, and present new talent to industry professionals. It's a great way to network in an entertaining and comfortable nightlife setting.
Many artists, exhibitors and performers who have participated in Ethos in the past have gained tremendous success, including recording artists OneRepublic and Colbie Calliat and six clothing lines that have been placed in stores like Fred Segal, Popsy, Metro - Park, and Glow.
