"Catch Me If You Can"
David Alexander: "Love Me If You Dare."
By Lisa Davenport

Feeling good in your own skin is just as important an aspect of looking good as having great clothes. This has become a motto for David Alexander who clearly made a magnificent splash in LA this season with his 2010 Spring Collection. He's a man with a big vision and a big heart. As fashion houses from New York to Paris adjusted to the ebbing and flowing of the marketplace, Alexander's youthful energy captivated the packed house in the front lobby of the Los Angeles Theater stage downtown. With a keen sense of the times, of who he is, and what he's about, he embraces the idea that being true to ones' self also offers one of the best conceptual foundations for designing a collection. The theme? Love. Alexander combines flirty independence with youthful sophistication to create catchy, unforgettable, pieces that seemed to resound in the space like the riff of a great love song. His sheer passion for his craft clearly appealed to celebrities who attended like Ashley Roberts of the Pussy Cat Dolls, Asher Book, who co-starred in Fame, Shaun B-Laurent, Jennia Frederique, and Loreal Nu. The audience appreciated the meshing of effortless, classy style and a modern hip-hop vibe.

To evoke the palpable warmth and dramatic verve of spring, Alexander departed from his 2009 winter collection by showcasing some of life's precious moments inspired by his mom-- a red-head who's had a "troubled love life". A remix of music by Jay Z, compiled especially for his Spring show, pulsated throughout the evening as the compelling story of a woman adrift "in the desert looking for a lost love" unfolded. Deeply influence by art-decco, especially in downtown LA, he started out with cogently constructed single-shouldered red minidress and followed with a "series" of gold and white pieces--both solid-colored dresses, and separate skirts and tops. Adding accessories like schoolgirl glasses toward the middle evoked an air of flirty innocence. As he showcased the crispness, and lightness of the sand meeting the sky, the confident, sleek geometric shoulders on some of the dresses reflected a Parisian' flare. When the show-stopping sequined dresses appeared, an oasis had been reached.

But the barren desert is not without danger. A series of snake-patterned pieces reminds us that the world of love is sometimes teeming with "snakes," Alexander proclaims. We saw minimal, toned, clean lines, the simplicity of two pieces, and pleated pants adorned with a vest. Echoing Alexander Wang with solids and sheers, one of the three smashing bathing suites--all one-pieces--made with snake-spandex and a "panel in the front" to enhance its sex appeal--became a tour- de-force of the evening. A solid cinched-waisted, turquoise dress became another highlight. In a different light, the pieces for the men conveyed a sporty ultra-masculine bravado. A green studded top signified a prickly cactus. Loosely draped, sand-colored shorts matched with buttoned-up, short-sleeved plaids or a sleeveless, cool white top, gave the men a laid-back air.

Alexander ranks among those designers that Hollywood spiritedly embraces. He has designed for movies like, Box of Shadows. Megan Fox sizzled on the cover of Rolling Stone in one of his breathtaking one-piece bathing suits. Starlets like Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears have become unyielding fans. He's even traveling to Europe to start designing costumes for a new vampire movie. And in the upcoming "Sex and the City Two," icon of fashion Sarah Jessica Parker will wear his "fashion forward" designs.
After the show, actress Fredrique described his dresses as "yummy" and "wearable." She says they'll "never go out of style." But perhaps the solution to the puzzle of love is simple. As David explains, his mom once said, "You can marry more in five minutes than you can make in a lifetime." That might become especially true if you're wearing one of his designs!
