When in Rome
By Rita Cook

Put a smile on your face and embrace all that is Rome remembering that nowhere is the food tastier, the people friendlier and the atmosphere brighter than when you are in this City of Lights.

When you love Rome, the city will love you too. You'll know it. So don't delay, first off, head up the Spanish Steps and throw your bags down at the Intercontinental - in fact, have the concierge set up some tours for you and you'll be on your way.

Think of the two V's that are so easily associated with Rome; Vespas and the Vatican. It's two ways to "see it all" quickly.

Grab a Vespa (see, you can go local) and enjoy the many attractions in Rome from two wheels indulging in the long ago past as it merges easily into the future in this ageless city. In fact, a trip across the centuries will be an excellent way to get acclimated to all there is to offer. Who can argue with a vintage Vespa and a driver to show you the secrets, it doesn't get better than that. There are several tours to choose from including the Secret Rome Tour and the Roman Holiday Tour - take your pick, but don't miss this four hours of seeing Rome like the natives (HR Tours - www.hrincentives .com).

A lively and vibrant city, there are a few stops you have to make when it comes to ancient monuments so think the Colosseum, the largest monument in existence from its time period; the Roman Forum with 900 years of history and one of the city's most important archeological sites; the Pantheon. There is also Capitoline Hill where you can get a good glimpse of the Roman Forum. Note too that the main point of the hill is the Piazza del Campidoglio designed by none other than Michelangelo, in Rome, the remarkable is just commonplace.

Don't try to do too or you won't enjoy it. Pick a century and enjoy - if medieval and Renaissance buildings are more your thing, you'll find it in Rome - be sure to stop at a few of the many fountains and don't pass up the museums (think Vatican Museum - the largest museum complex in the world).

In fact, for your second day in Rome it's time to head to Vatican City including St. Peter's Basilica, the largest Roman Catholic Building in the world. Ask at the concierge desk to set up a private tour for you and pass the crowds waiting to get in the famous Roman landmark.

Oh and when you need another shot of espresso there's a café just right around the corner and perfect for people watching too. Coffee and of course, you have to eat, a lot, since it is Italy. Pizza and pasta means the margarita pizza, spaghetti Bolognese, gelato, and vino.

Have a nightcap on the roof of the Intercontinental before bed and think native ordering a lemoncello. Rome will always remain a dazzling metropolis to lovingly adore and return to again and again.

In the heart of the city just two paces away from the Trinita dei Monti, which from the Piazza di Spagna leads to Via Condotti and the gardens on Pincio Hill. The balconies here offer amazing views of Rome and its rooftops along with a glimpse of many of the monuments that make Rome such an extraordinary destination. The building is a historical 16th century residence built in neo-classical style and was once a convent as well.
