The Sunset - a Landmark Cottage on Malibu Sand
By Mel and Ronnie Greenberg

Overlooking a wide expanse of sand and sea, The Sunset Restaurant, an elegantly re-envisioned landmark cottage, is set on a beautiful stretch of Malibu's Zuma Beach, a few steps from the waves.

The restaurant switched hands and names frequently across several decades, bearing the names of Whale Watch; Dudley's (after Dudley Moore); Splash; and Monroe's (named and themed for Marilyn Monroe). Throughout the years in addition to the locals, it attracted celebrities such as Johnny Carson, Dudley Moore, Marilyn Monroe, and John F. Kennedy. It was also the site for intimate and impromptu performances from Hollywood legends Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand.

Bringing a little of Ibiza Italy with them, the restaurateur turnaround duo of Rodolfo Costella and Franco Simplicio, who morphed the seaside legend of Moonshadows out of it 1970s past, have just completed a menu and interior renovation of The Sunset . Along with the help of visionary managing partner Raymond Byrne, it is emerging for the first time as a culinary contender with a Hampton's-Meets-Malibu -chic look, and a menu worthy of a drive from Los Angeles or beyond

The downstairs lounge that opens up to breathtaking ocean views, is set in a palette of crèmes and whites with comfy Zebra patterned ottomans. The Bistro Dining room, right next door is known for their new culinary-styled pan-European fare and pairings with artisanal wines. The menu is created by Chef Jake Rojas with farm fresh offerings from the famous Santa Monica Farmer's Market and the Ventura county farms. The Sunset offers Hanger steak with chimchurri or mussels and impossibly crisped and salted pommes fritte. A simple perfect spaghetti Bolognese appears on the menu and plump fresh oysters are served on the half shell with a French Mignonette enhanced with fennel and shallot. Sweet crab legs and peel-able shrimp are served alongside a house-made spicy mustard aioli. A giant European chalk board announces each day's specials and all entrees are under $20. A Quartino (1/3 bottle) wine program with excellent wines are offered from Malibu to Marlborough, Piedmont to Paso Robles, Napa to Bordeaux.

In between the lounge and dining room, special lanterns and candles light up the vibrant bar where a famed mixologist with European flair stirs up inventive cocktails. The Sunset also attracts the famous enclave's musical professionals to sit-in on the weekly live music.

A hidden elevator conceals the entrance to "The White Room," a swank upstairs hideaway for private events, overlooking magnificent Pacific horizons. Featured is an epicurean experience with an exclusive menu and wine list. The room replete with tufted white leather chairs and deep rich woods is adorned with vintage photos and antiques. The Sunset is also one of the few locations in Southern California where dreamy outdoor nuptials can be exchanged on the sand.

The restaurant is open Tuesday-Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Located at 6800 Westward Beach Road, in Malibu, phone for reservations at
