ART UNITES AT THE NOHO GALLERY LA
By Tony Reverditto

Art Unites 3 is the third annual exhibition and celebration of personal artwork from the members of IATSE Local 800: Art Directors Guild and Scenic, Title & Graphic Artists. The exhibition will run through October 5 at NoHo Gallery LA, located at the Lankershim Art Center in the heart of the NoHo Arts District. The Lankershim Arts Center was built in 1939 and is a historical landmark. The Center is also home of the award-winning Road Theatre Company making it a true center of arts.

The Art Directors Guild represents eighteen hundred Production Designers, Art Directors, Scenic, Title, Matte and Graphic Artists, Set Designers, Model Makers, and Illustrators. Production Design-ers are the visual artists and storytellers create and develop the overall look, atmosphere and emotion that move the story. They do this through the conception and creation of stage sets and the selection and alteration of practical locations and backgrounds. Production Designers also collaborate with the visual effects team and provide the designs necessary to maintain a coherent blend between the look of the production, cinematography and the post-production visual effects footage.

During the day, these artists lead hard-working lives as design professionals through a combination of observation, passion and imagination bring the writer's words and the director's vision to life on the screens of television and film. Art Unites 3 is an opportunity to do their own thing and promote and share their personal vision with the rest of the world.

Scenic Artists Michael Denering and Denis Olsen (both with over 30 years in the business) co-chair and produce the ADG Fine Arts Committees return. They orchestrate gathering the artists and their work from many mediums, including painting, sculpture, woodwork, watercolors, oils, textiles, mixed media and photography. All of the works on display are available for purchase.

Some of the Local 800 members participating are: Gunnar Ahmer, Scenic Artist, (Angels and Demons, Dreamgirls, Memoirs of a Geisha, Ali); Marc Benacerraf, Production Designer/Art Director, (Comm-ercials for Hummer, Infinity, Ford Focus, Pepsi, Virgin Mobil); Albert Brenner, Production Designer and five-time Academy Award Nom-inee for (The Sunshine Boys, The Goodbye Girl ,The Turning Point, 2010, and Beaches); Scott Chambliss, Production Designer, (Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3, Alias, Brothers & Sisters, Swingtown); Dahl Delu, Prod-uction Designer/Art Director, (Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Cheers, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air); Barbara Dunphy, Production Designer, (Man Without a Face, Dick, Reindeer Games); Ann Harris Hayes, Art Director, Set Designer, (Heroes, The Last Samurai, The Fugitive, Dante's Peak); John Moffitt, Scenic Artist, (Beetlejuice, Lemony Snicket, Ironman, Spid-erman, Pirates of the Carribean); Stan Olexiewicz, Scenic Artist, (Return of the Jedi, Spiderman, Million Dollar Baby, Pirates of the Caribbean, Iron Man);Lori Pond Graphics Designer, (Dancing With The Stars, American Idol, Access Hollywood, Grammy Awards, People's Choice Awards); Harrison Richardswise Assistant Art Director, (Commercials for Lexus, Sharp, Verizon, Nissan, Mercedes Benz); Edward L. These individuals have history as far back as the original conception of the Hollywood motion picture industry.

One of the highlights of the opening on Sunday, September 14, was the genre-defying string quartet, Supernova. They added a touch of class to the event, and it felt like a musical score to a movie, creating an amazing ambiance while viewing such a pleasing plethora of artwork. As diverse as their job titles, so is the artwork, from simple landscape water colors to dramatic and spiritual oil paintings. There is definitely something for everyone!

The guild has a Board of Directors comprised of representatives of each discipline in art direction, scenic work and title design. "None of this would be possible without, curator Daniel DeBevoise, who has always welcomes the Guild with open arms" stated Denering. Art Director, Libby Woolems, and Scenic Artist, Jim Fiorito, plus countless ADG members have brought the unique exhibit to life in the gallery. Nicki La Rosa is the committee liaison and manages the nuts and bolts of the Art show. The tremendous collaboration of talent and hard work make for enjoyable cultural experience.
