Dr. Lee Creates Balance
By Rhonda Heaslip

Dr. Donna Lee is a natural health doctor and a meta-physician who offers her patients wellness in mind, body, and spirit. She uses Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique (B.E.S.T.) within her practice, which is designed to create a physical, mental and emotional balance.

The B.E.S.T. procedure promotes wellness in body, mind and spirit. Dr. Lee focuses on touch points and breath work. This in turn works on removing negative interference from the nervous system so that the body can heal itself. This technique is a form of an energy medicine, and interference to the body presents itself in the form of negative thoughts. Through removing interference (negative thoughts), the B.E.S.T. technique puts your body into a state of "harmony" that promotes total wellness. She mentions that when the body is stuck in "stress mode", it causes the mind and the body to work at a less than optimal level.

B.E.S.T. deals with the 6 essentials of life. These include thinking, breathing, drinking, eating, sleeping, and exercise. When a client works through a lifestyle change to address eating, drinking, and exercising, and sleep in conjunction with B.E.S.T., the body will rid itself of disease and perpetuate a state of wellness.

B.E.S.T. has a two part procedure. The facedown procedure is used to balance out the autonomic nervous system which deals with rest/digest and flight/fight. The faceup procedure deals with the emotions that create interference in the nervous system. B.E.S.T. removes interference from the nervous system so that the body and mind can heal. Dr. Lee states that B.E.S.T has a protocol, but it is designed for the individual. She performs both leg and muscle tests to gauge how to give her patients effective treatment.

According to Dr. Lee, most people are operating at less than 100% efficiency physically and mentally due to our busy lives. In order to maintain a healthy body, and mind Dr. Lee recommends regular visits. Dr. Lee states that while we are very quick to maintain our cars, our hair, and our nails, we don't work enough on the maintenance our bodies need. Dr. Lee says many patients feel a difference after their first visit with her, but within four visits, major changes are occurring within the body and mind.

With ongoing treatment, patients find themselves healthier, happier, and less aggressive. They have better relationships and can set goals better. After asking Dr. Lee what she would say to a skeptic that is thinking about trying B.E.S.T., she describes her technique as noninvasive and universal. She says, "This technique is non-forceful. It does not interfere with other treatments that you may have with your other health practitioners." With that in mind, a patient undergoing care with a traditional practitioner can see Dr. Lee and use B.E.S.T. as a supplement to traditional care. Dr. Lee maintains that B.E.S.T. is a positive reinforcement to your ongoing physical or emotional treatment or just on its own.

B.E.S.T. is universal in its ability to heal and address issues in children, teens, and adults. Dr. Lee enjoys being able to treat entire families and see their results yield harmony in the home. Dr. Lee stands by the fact that a B.E.S.T. treatment is cheaper than a pedicure and has lasting results in both mind and body. Dr. Lee says the most exciting and rewarding part of her career is the smiles that she sees on her patients' faces when they get off the table. She says she feels like she is witnessing a miracle every day.

Interview with Robert Krochmal, M.D.
By Natasha Billawala

Robert Krochmal, M.D. believes the greatest healing occurs when doctors embrace both scientific and holistic medicinal practices. Valley Scene magazine spoke with this dedicated physician whose purpose is "… to rediscover the sacredness of the doctor-patient relationship…" while being as "… clear as possible about how people can best achieve their optimal wellness."

Dr. Krochmal treats issues ranging from weight loss to sleep deprivation to cancer prevention.

V.S. What's your background?
R.K. I grew up in Connecticut and attended Brown University, majoring in Biology. Next, I spent a year in Lima, Peru teaching high school science. During that year, I made many trips to the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon jungle where I began to understand the power of natural medicines and also the fragility of that ecosystem. In 1994 I went to UCLA medical school and approached Western Medicine with a broader perspective. I specialized in Family Practice at White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles. During my internship, I founded a Community Garden in the neighborhood of the hospital, a project I continue to be involved in ten years later. I did my fellowship in Nutrition and Phytomedicine (Medicinal Plants) also at UCLA.

V.S. What attracted you to this area of medicine?
R.K. I'm interested in helping people to heal and get better, not just cover up symptoms. Approaching medicine from this holistic perspective is more enjoyable and stimulating, and, more importantly, patients actually get better.

V.S. Tell us about your practice.
R.K. My practice covers the spectrum, from infants to the elderly. I particularly enjoy helping parents find the best nutrition plan for their kids. Teenagers are inspiring to work once they trust you, because they are really willing to do what's right for their health.

V.S. What do you offer that's different from other practices?
R.K. I strive to offer medical care that incorporates the knowledge of the 21st century, but has the quality of the early 20th century doctor-patient relationship. I try to demonstrate how health care in the United States can be better.

V.S. Do you think people manage their health well?
R.K. People try hard to be healthy, but there are mixed messages out there about how to do it, and people get frustrated.

V.S. Your website talks about "… connecting the science of the body and mind to the medicine of the future." Would you please explain this concept?
R.K. There are a lot of people who think holistic medicine doesn't work or is not as science-based as conventional medicine. Actually, the opposite is true. Integrative medicine targets treatments to many levels of the body's physiology. For example, discovering a patient has high cholesterol and providing a cholesterol blocker is elementary. There's more to it than that. If you solve the problem on a deeper level, it work better and has less side effects.

V.S. One of your areas of expertise is in weight loss. Why is your approach so successful?
R.K. First of all, my approach is personalized to each individual. I look deeper into medical issues so I am often able to make headway into problems that sometimes have been unsuccessfully treated for years. I understand exactly what is happening with the body, making weight loss difficult. I'm not afraid to use typical weight loss medicines, but it doesn't stop there. There are many other ways to boost metabolism, burn fat, and generally undergo a detoxification process that leads to tremendous weight loss. I don't know of any other weight loss programs that take into account all of these different factors, and I think that is why people are not only successful in losing weight, but are able to keep it off.

V.S. Give an example of one of your success stories.
R.K. I have many patients who not only lose ten to fifteen pounds per month, but also see their other medical problems disappear in the process. One patient has lost almost seventy pounds in five months and has seen fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, cholesterol, early diabetes, fatigue and other problems disappear as well.
