Boys & Girls Club’s Annual Mile Of Quarters
By Staff Writer

The Third Annual Mile of Quarters is being held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Westfield Topanga Mall, with proceeds benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley. Last year this free event attracted thousands of youngsters, parents, and grandparents who helped lay out more than 60,000 quarters across the mall.
Key sponsors of the event are Councilman Dennis P. Zine, Wells Fargo Bank, Westfield, Keyes Motors, Neiman Marcus, Blue Shield of California, Henry's Farmers Market, Aaron Thomas & Associates, Cooper Communications, Ellen and Howard Wang, Corporate Pointe at West Hills, and several others.
The event is built around community members contributing quarters to be laid out for one mile (5,280 feet) stretching through the Canyon section of the Mall. One foot of quarters equals $3.25. If the entire mile is filled, the organization will raise $17,160. The community raised this amount last year to support the Club's programs for young people.
"This is not a major fundraising event for large donors; we look forward to parents and grandparents bringing their youngsters out to the mall and helping them understand the value of supporting others in their communities; families can participate for as little as $3.25 for one foot of quarters," said Gary Thomas, chairman of the non-profit youth service organization.
The event also will include music, an emcee, a deejay, dignitaries, and children's entertainment throughout the day.
For further information regarding sponsoring a portion of the Mile, please contact Jan Sobel at the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley at (818) 610-1054.
